A division essay begins with one topic and divides it out into several parts in order to take a closer, more detailed look at it. To write a division essay, you could choose a topic about a person, place, object, or event and then divide it into several aspects that analyze the topic from different points. Types of essay formats, then, do not vary much, except perhaps in the case of the narrative, if you have characters and dialogue.

But once you understand the purpose of each essay type, it really does make it a bit easier to choose a topic, a thesis, and to write something that will meet instructor expectations. Next, we are going to explore other types of essays, but it is important to be aware that they use all the same techniques as the aforementioned.

Most of them do not strictly fall into one category of essays, but use all the traits from each category in different proportion to suit their own purpose.
