" If one were to look at the facts surrounding the actual event this story was based on, any assumption that" Friend" was anything but a man would be thrown out due to logic. My Analysis for who is Arnold Friend Since the beginning of time, stories have been told about the forces of good and evil.

Some say the devil is the personification of evil, the enemy of God and humankind, and the evil force that never seems to prevail. First, Arnold Friend has many nonhuman characteristics. The story describes ArnoldFriends hair by saying, he had shaggy, shabby black hair that looked crazy as a wig (Oates 285). Joyce Wegs says in her essay about the story that his hair really is a wig suggesting that he couldbe wearing it to cover up his horns (357).

Arnold Friend clearly symbolizes the devil through his physical traits, his knowledge of Connie, and his power over her kind of like he was hypnotizing her to go with him.

First, Arnold Friends physical traits portray him as Satan. That's because Arnold Friend is a blend of some familiar types from literature and pop culture. He's the Matthew McConaughey character from Dazed and Confused, the guy who still hangs out at high school way after he's graduated.

Arnold Friends neck seems to be the neck of a muscular animal which is a devilish characteristic which makes Arnold Friend the devil. Some of Arnold Friends other characteristics is the makeup he is wearing and his boots. Many people interpret Arnold Friend as the devil, and I would have to agree. The entire story has religious implications so I would not say it is taken out of context if you refer to him as the devil.
