Through coursework and background research, you will develop a question that has yet to be answered by prior research. Every PhD candidate in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences is required to successfully complete and submit a dissertation to qualify for degree conferral. This document provides information on how to submit your dissertation, requirements for dissertation formatting, and your dissertation publishing and distribution options.

Before. Persons holding a PhD or its equivalent, or who have completed most of the work required to earn the PhD elsewhere, may apply to a PhD program in the Graduate School only if it is an unrelated field of study. Having a record of our theses in the library provides current and future students with research and design resources with which to inform their own work, as well as contributes to the longstanding history of architectural theses at the GSD.

Every PhD candidate is required to successfully complete and submit a dissertation to qualify for degree conferral. Since each department maintains specific requirements for the content and evaluation of the dissertation, you should review your department's guidelines prior to beginning the process.

PREPARING TO SUBMIT THE DISSERTATION The electronic submission of your dissertation and the original Signature Page are due on the dates specified on the Harvard Chan Schools Academic Calendar Summary for each degree awarding period (November, March, and May).
